Week of February 5th

Reading: We will be reading Six Million Paper Clips which is a series of articles about the Holocaust.
Writing: We are working on our non-fiction unit to go along with our reading unit.
Math: We are working on fractions. We are starting subtracting with unlike denominators. Science: We are finishing up rocks and minerals.
Social Studies: We will learn about the Holocaust more in depth, to help the children better understand their reading.

Spelling Words – Each of the words this week is a plural noun.
Some of the words are made plural by adding s, such as monkeys, some are made plural by replacing f with ves, such as shelves, and some are made plural by dropping the y and adding ies, such as pennies.

The ch sound is what you heart at the beginning of the word charity. The sh sound is what you hear at the end of the word blush. The j sound is what you hear in the end of the word arrange.

Math: We will begin to learn about fractions. We are starting adding fractions with unlike denominators. Science: We are finishing up rocks and minerals.

Spelling Words –R controlled vowels. When a vowel is followed by an -r it changes the sound of the vowel. The vowel and the –r usually stay in the same syllable.

Units of Study

Reading: We are finishing up My Life in Dog Years.

Writing: We are finishing publishing our autobiographies.

Math: We are currently finishing our decimal tasks. We launch fractions after the break.

Science: We are working on a heart rate lab, and learning how the heart pumps blood through the body.

Social Studies: We will continue chapter 2 –Early Civilizations in the Americas. There will be a project on the 13 Colonies.
Due to the shortened week, and a school trip on Tuesday, there will not be any spelling words.

Reading: This week the students will continue to our autobiography unit, My Life in Dog Years by Gary Paulsen. This reading unit is connected with our writing unit.

Writing: We are in the process of publishing our writing unit which is Autobiographies that is linked with our reading.
Math: We are currently working on decimals. We will learn how to multiply decimals as well as begin to divide decimals.

Science: We are learning about rocks and minerals. We have learned about Mohs Scale of Hardness and will continue to learn more about this topic and complete a science lab on minerals.
Social Studies: We will continue chapter 2 –Early Civilizations in the Americas. There will be a project on the 13 Colonies.
