Update from Ms. Ginis – week of 2/29

Good morning, parents!

Here are some reminders for the week:

*Parent teacher conferences are being held this Thursday. I look forward to seeing all of you. Please try to adhere to the times that I sent you and I will do my best to keep on schedule and not keep anyone waiting for too long.

*We are working hard to prepare for the upcoming ELA and Math Exams. This should be a time of focus and hard work for the children. I will gladly show you on Thursday what your child’s classwork looks like and discuss ways to improve, if necessary. This year, the NYS ELA Exam is April 5-7 and the NYS Math Exam is April 13-15.

*It’s not all work! There are fun times ahead, too. On Wednesday is Read Across America day. Official notice from the school was sent last week, I believe. Children should come dressed in pajamas and bring in their favorite book. This year, the fifth graders will enjoy a pajama dance party in the afternoon. If you’d like to contribute to the fun, please send in a snack (chips, cookies, drinks, candy, and so on) to go on the food table at the party. It will be shared with the rest of the fifth grade children at the party.

*March Madness week is coming! This year, it will take place on the week of March 21. A notice from the school will be coming soon to break down the festivities for each day. On Thursday, March 24, we will have our annual fifth grade Olymipics. Our class color will be black, so please have a black shirt ready for your child on that day. And come in to school that day, dress in black, and cheer on our class!

*Please look for an upcoming letter (this week) requesting early childhood pictures of your child for the graduation slide show.

Have a wonderful week and I look forward to meeting with you on Thursday.

Yours,
Ms. Ginis

Good morning parents. I hope you had a great week and got to spend some fun time with your children.

Here’s what you need to know this week:

* Crazy Hat Day (100th day) is Friday. The administration asked that the hats be brought in today just to ensure that we would get them. They don’t actually need to be in today, so don’t worry if your child didn’t come in with it. Send it in when you are ready to. Walking trip slips for Friday will come out any day now, so please send it back when you get it, and, as always, I could use some chaperones. This one will be a quick one!

* I am missing 6 signed promotion in doubt letters. I will give those 6 children another copy of the letter today. Please send it back in. Remember, that this is not at all a notification that your child is being held back. It’s just to let you know that his/her average in reading or math had fallen below the 70% level. In fact, many of the children who were promotion in doubt are no longer failing. I have dropped their lowest scores and the children are showing some improvement lately. Please keep checking on Jupitergrades for updated averages and test scores. The current grades will be a good predictor of their upcoming report card grades. Parent teacher conferences are coming up next week, on March 3. That’s next Thursday. So, that day will be a half day. Appointment slips will be coming home any day now.

* Math – Their latest quiz results were not satisfactory and are not a good way to kick off last marking period. I will return and review the quiz today (on area and perimeter) and will give the children the same quiz tomorrow. I will keep their higher score. Also, starting this week and for the next 8 or so weeks until the state math test, I will give the children a weekly math homework sheet that is mixed review of the skills learned this year. These sheets will be collected and graded every Friday. This will provide good review and scaffolding and will let me, you, and your child know what skills they need more work in. Don’t forget splashmath!

*Read Across America (pajama day) is next Wednesday, March 2. Come see the parade in the school and have your child bring in his/her favorite book from home.

*The second senior dues payment of $50 is due this Friday.

*Lots of the children still need supplies!

Have a wonderful week and I’ll keep you updated if anything new comes up. Homework is enclosed.

Week of 2/1/16

Good morning, everyone, and welcome to February. This week, we are working on Six Million Paper Clips and our study of the Holocaust. We are drafting response to literature essays and continuing to study fractions, decimals, and percents. This week, we will also work on finding area and perimeter.

Important things to know (and some that are not so important):

*The first senior dues payment of $50 was due on Friday. The next payment is due at the end of this month. Payments can be made at any time (check or cash) and checks should be made out to P.S. 132. If there is a problem making payments, please let me know and we’ll figure it out.

*Book orders are due on Friday if you’d like to place an order.

*Promotion in doubt and grade reports are being distributed today. Not every child will receive a promotion in doubt letter, but every child will get a printout (addressed to you) with his or her grade averages from 1st and 2nd marking periods so you can see how they are doing. Please set up an appointment with me if you’d like to discuss anything concerning your child’s academic work this year.

*Some of the children still need supplies, mostly pencils, colors, paper, and sharpeners.

*I’m signing the children up for a new resource to help the children in math. It’s call Splashmath. Your invitation, along with your child’s username and password are being sent home today. Assignments were given for the children to practice skills already taught. I will be able to see their work and progress online each time they practice. Thanks to Ms. Figueroa for recommending this resource.

*Quite a few class assessments have been graded and returned recently, but many of them are not being sent back with your signatures. It is absolutely fine for you to keep them and review them. I’d just like to know that you have seen them and are aware of your children’s test scores. If you are ever finding that it’s been some time since you’ve seen a graded test, please contact me because chances are your child is not giving them to you.

Have a wonderful week.

Yours,
Ms. Ginis
