Week of May 16th

Reading- We will begin reading “Mr. Docker is Off His Rocker” by Dan Gutman. We will work on identifying story elements within the text such as problem/solution, and setting. We will be working on short paragraphs and questioning techniques to help us learn how to find answers on tests.

Writing- We will being working on writing a “How-To.” The students will choose a topic they feel they know a lot about and will make projects to share with the class detailing each step.

Math- The students will continue learning about graphing using pictographs and bar graphs. We will create our own graphs on topics of interest.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about New York City long ago.

Science- We will continue to learn about Living and Non-Living things. We will focus on what animals and plants need this week.

Writing- We will complete our writing unit; Opinion Writing. The students will write self reflections on their work, as well as peer reflections of a classmate.

Math- The students will be learning about graphing using collecting data and using tally marks.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about New York City long ago. We will learn about the Dutch and English in NY and how the city grew over time.

Science- We will continue to learn about Living and Non-Living things. We will learn about fish and their body parts.

Reading- We will review ” Lily and Miss Liberty” by Carla Stevens. We will share our Spring break homework around this book. We will be making text to self and text to text connections. We also will be working on short paragraphs and questioning techniques to help us learn how to find answers on tests.

Writing- We will continue our writing unit; Opinion Writing. The students will begin to edit and revise their writing. We should finish publishing this week.

Math- The students will be learning about mass and volume. We will be measuring in kilograms, grams, pounds and ounces.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will continue to learn about New York City long ago. We will learn about the Dutch and English in NY and how the city grew over time.

Science- We will begin to learn about Living and Non-Living things. We will learn about fish and their body parts.

Writing- We will continue our writing unit; Opinion Writing. The students will work on their introduction and conclusion. They will begin to edit their work with a partner.

Math- The students will be learning about mass and volume. We will be measuring in kilograms and grams.

Week of April 4th

Week of April 4th, 2016

Reading- We will read “Detective LaRue: Letters from the Investigation” and discuss the varying points of view stated in the book. We will compare/contrast the two books that we have read.

Writing- We will continue our writing unit; Opinion Writing. The students will create a catchy introduction that states their opinion and why they feel the way they do. We will also write a conclusion. They are learning that for opinion writing they need to write like an OREO cookie (Opiion, Reasons, Examples, Opinion).

Math- The students will be completing our unit on Measurement. We will discuss feet and yards. Test has been moved to Wednesday, April 6th.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will learn about New York City long ago. We will learn about the Dutch and English in NY and how the city grew over time.

Science- We will continue to learn about Force and Motion. We will learn about speed and direction and will take a quiz at the end of the week, if time allows.

Reading- We will reread “Dear Mrs. LaRue: Letters from Obedience School” and take a test on TUESDAY. We will then read “Detective LaRue: Letters from the Investigation” and discuss the varying points of view stated in the book. We will compare/contrast the two books.

Writing- We will continue our writing unit; Opinion Writing. The students will begin to draft their 3 reasons to support their opinion.

Math- The students will be continuing measurement using inches but will be using half-inch, and quarter inch. We will also discuss feet. We will have a quiz Friday.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will learn about New York City long ago. We will learn about the Dutch and English in NY and how the city grew over time.

Science- We will continue to learn about Force and Motion. We will learn about speed and direction and will take a quiz next week.

Reading- We will continue to read opinion articles from different sources such as News ELA and books in class. They will distinguish the opinions stated from facts. We will also discuss our opinions on the articles.

Writing- We will be starting a new writing unit; Opinion Writing. The students will learn how to take a stance on what they believe on a topic of interest.

Math- The students will be continuing measurement using inches. We will get into half inch and quarter inches.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will finish sharing our winter break homework on how NY landmarks looked then and now. We also will be going online and watching videos of each landmark to learn more about them.

Science- We will continue to learn about Force and Motion. We will be focusing on magnets.

Reading- We will begin to read articles from different sources that have opinions. Students will be able to distinguish between fact and opinion based on these articles and will discuss their own opinions based upon what they have read.

Writing- We will be starting a new writing unit; Opinion Writing. The students will learn how to take a stance on what they believe on a topic of interest.

Math- The students will be learning measurement. We will quickly review non-standard measurement (using paperclips etc) and then move on to measuring using centimeters and inches.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will continue to share our winter break homework on how NY landmarks looked then and now. We also will be going online and watching videos of each landmark to learn more about them.

Science- We will continue to learn about Force and Motion. We will be focusing on magnets.

Writing- We will be writing peer and self reflections on our writing. This involves each students reflecting upon their own biography and their classmates.

Math- The students will continue to learn how to multiply and divide using word problems. They will work on solving problems and explaining their solutions.

Social Studies- In Social Studies, we will be sharing our winter break homework on how NY landmarks looked then and now. We also will be going online and watching videos of each landmark to learn more about them.

Science- We will continue to learn about Force and Motion. We will be focusing on magnets.
