Homework Sheet and Newsletter for April 3rd

Hi Parents,

I hope this email finds everyone enjoying the weekend! It really felt like spring on this beautiful Sunday and the temperatures look so great for the week ahead! Having the children able to go outside for recess is such a benefit for them, their focus and their relationships!

We are still blooming in our classroom and I’m happy that the children are still getting along. Mindfulness with Ms. Christina (Reich) has also done such wonderful things with them individually and collectively! Next time anyone sees Christina, please join me in thanking her for all of her hard work this year with the children! I honestly believe that they listen and behave so much better because of her work. She has also been such a wonderful resource for me, teaching me so many tools to implement throughout my day, helping the children (and myself) be more mindful. We appreciate you, Christina!

There will be a Math test on Wednesday.

Book fair on Monday! Please see Laura’s email from Friday that gives the info and schedule of the Book Fair. (Thanks for doing that, Laura!)

I will be distributing a packet for Spring Break sometime this week. The children may get a head start on it on Thursday since I didn’t assign any Math Homework that night. I do ask that you kindly continue practicing multiplication facts nightly with your children.

Please make sure you review your child’s homework each evening and sign it.

News for the week of April 3rd

Hi Parents,

This week our class is learning about……..

Reading-
This week we will continue our investigation on identifying the problems characters may face in our fictional stories and reading on to find the solution. Your children also will be participating in reciprocal reading, in which their ability to discuss diverse topics has become more enriched as the time goes on. We have been discussing the treatment and welfare of animals, specifically in zoos, Sea World and circuses. Your children have been contributing beautiful thoughts to our conversation. I encourage you to ask them their opinion on these topics when you can!

Writing-

This week we will be publishing our first opinion piece! Strategies taught during this unit have been focusing more on mechanics. I have taught the children how to use commas in a list, including the word AND. Please encourage your children to use proper comma usage in this area at home. Before publishing, I am going to have some revising lessons on how to use transitional tags: in addition, also, furthermore, etc, with proper comma usage. Upon assessing the children’s writing while supporting them during this unit, I definitely feel there is a need for it.

I am so impressed by your children’s writing during this unit! They are committed and dedicated and have progressed so much this year! Feel free to look at our inside bulletin board when you are in the classroom. It has September’s writing piece, then the narrative and finally, the All About piece. You can see how beautifully they have progressed from the beginning of the year until now.

Math-
This week we will work on multiplication of the 3 and 4 times tables! Children will work with their groups on manipulating materials, grouping, repeatedly adding and more! There will be a Math test on Wednesday!

Science-
This week we will be doing our science investigations on magnets! From some of our parents wonderful donations on Donor’s Choose, I am breaking out the magnets and your children will be making hypotheses, trying the magnets out and analyzing results!

Sincerely,
Ms. Kender

News for the Week of February 27th

Hi Parents,

Hope all is well! Monday begins our first day of Spring! Our year is flying by and I’m happy there is warmer weather on its way!

Thank you to those who spoke with their children about last week’s newsletter. We were hard at work this past week talking through any issues that may arise and learning how to problem solve, in a more kind way. I’m happy to say that I feel that our message is resonating with the children. Moving forward, we will continue working on the social-emotional aspect of the classroom and hopefully more friendships blossom and we have less drama and conflict.

This week our class is learning about……..

Reading-
We will be continuing reading chapter book No Talking by Andrew Clements. Strategies that we will be working on this week is identifying problems our character faces and ways in which he changes over the course of the story. While conducting this reading strategy, we will identify the problem, how the character changed because of it and who influenced the character.

Writing-

This week, our class will be working on picking their topics for opinion writing. I have conveyed to them that it’s important to choose something that they have experience with and would be able to write about. Please encourage your child to discuss their topic with you so you can ensure that they have sufficient experience and knowledge surrounding what they’ve chosen.

Math-
This week we will work on customary units of measurement. We will be solving real-world word problems pertaining to customary units of measurement and using measuring tape, rulers and yard stick to do math investigations in the classroom.

Social Studies-
We will begin talking about national leaders through read alouds and research! Our next round of Enrichment clusters will begin this week and students will be delving into Europe this time around.

Science-
This week we will continue our work on balance and motion. We are working on vocabulary development and discussing gravity, friction and force!

Sincerely,
Ms. Kender

PS- Also a kind reminder that I dismiss between 2:25 and 2:30. Please try your best to be on time.

News for the Week of February 27th

Hi Parents,
I hope everyone had an awesome weekend! It was so nice speaking with all of you during Parent-Teacher conference. By this time of year, since we spend so much time together, I know your children so well. Hopefully my input gave you a better glimpse of how they are doing academically.

One theme that I heard throughout the evening was questions and statements about friendships within the classroom. By the end of the night, I realized that I may need to broaden my scope of knowledge of the class, learning more about the social dynamic, since it occurred to me that I was lacking in what was going on amongst them.

"Investigating" is how I spent most of Friday morning, getting down to the bottom of what’s going on. What I learned about your children is that some of them are feeling socially isolated where as much as they try, cannot enter a group, they are excluded from a game because they are not picked or a game is impossible to play because the rules that have been made are constantly being changed. Also, all of your children are so much more advanced in maturity, so instead of just having fun when they’re in the schoolyard for 20 minutes, they are rather fixated on the bureaucracy of the games that they play and they spent quite a lot of time arguing about it, rather than just playing.

I’m certain that we all have the same common goal when it comes to your children-we want them to be better people. I’m going to be honest that my heart was heavy at times when certain children spoke openly that no one wanted to be their friend no matter how hard they tried. It was truly heartbreaking to see when I asked the children if anyone ever felt alone in school at any point and most of them raised their hand. I want to fix what’s happening socially to our classroom, making it more of a lighthearted atmosphere, and I especially want there to be an open conversation going on in the classroom and at home about how the children can be a better friend.

I understand some of the children have been together since Pre-K and some groups are a bit tight, but I would like the children to try and give other students a chance. Offering another student to play during recess or accommodating the game to fit more children than at first anticipated, would be a nice gesture. I also explained to them that I would like them to be more flexible. Some of them take the games their playing so seriously, that they’re probably less fun than they could be because they’re so rigidly focusing on the rules. Bossiness came up a lot and the children were expressing that they did not favor the game when the other children were being bossy. Finally, during lunchtime and all times of group-forming, I would like them to be more aware of who’s not included or who is alone and to invite that person to do whatever it is that they’re doing.

Your children all have wonderful hearts, I think they just need little reminders of how to participate in acts of kindness. Their writing homework will reflect friendship and social issues, so after checking their homework, please just have a little conversation with them on what is going on for them socially, how they can fix a situation that’s not going so well for them and ways in which they can be a better friend. Christina Reich, who does Mindfulness which them each Wednesday, will also be addressing these issues. With this joint effort and more uplifting weather, I’m confident we can get out of our little rut and all get along to close out what has been such a wonderful school year!

Writing-

Our next unit is all about opinion writing! Students will be learning the difference between fact and opinion and learn how to use specific wording to express their opinions. We will begin picking topics this week on what your children want to right about. They will have to take a stance on a certain issue and defend it.

Math-
