This week our school is celebrating a week of Holiday Cheer! Please refer to the homework sheet below that includes the activities for each day!

There is a Reading Assessment for our Magic Tree house book, Pilgrims on Wednesday. Please inform me if you are leaving early for holiday break. Since the children have not yet finished their writing pieces and they are due, I need to modify things accordingly.

News for the Week of December 19th

Hi Parents,

I hope this newsletter finds everyone enjoying the holiday season. I want to give a special shout out to Gaby’s mom for doing a beautiful thing for me. Back in September, I signed a project up on Donor’s Choose for a piece of technology for my classroom. I wanted an ELMO because at my old school, I relied so heavily on it for each and every period of the day. Ms. Colon somehow found my project and has been privately fundraising for it for our class. My dream that I didn’t see happening, is now closer to becoming a reality. If you would like to donate, please click on the link below. An ELMO is a document camera that allows anything to be projected on my SmartBoard. When the children share their work, they can project it for all to see. When I’m reading a book, sometimes it’a difficult for all to see, so I can project it on the SmartBoard. Any time I run an experiment or use math manipulative, I can project it. It is such a useful tool that everyone would be able to benefit from.I I know this comes at a bad time because it is the holidays, but I have about 20 more days until the project expires. Whatever anyone can do, would greatly be appreciated…Thank you in advance!

My students need to visually see the writing process of each other, their read aloud books projected onto a big screen, science experiments projected for everyone to see and to share their work after a lesson. My students are gifted and talented students that come from Williamsburg, New York, and surrounding neighborhoods. They are bright and need to stay focused during various lessons. When engaged,…

This week our class is learning about……..

Reading-

For our nonfiction unit, our class will finish reading Magic Tree House: Pilgrims. During this week, we will work on using text evidence to find the answers to our question. We will also be reading informational books about Hanukkah and Christmas.

Writing-

This week we will finish writing our All About piece. Children will partake in the editing and revision process. When they feel confident their piece is perfected for all to see, they will publish. I look forward to hanging their pieces in hallway for everyone’s enjoyment.

Math-

This week we will move into the topic of mental math. We are continuing to perfect our process of of reciprocal math. What Reciprocal Math is, is that each child is assigned a role and is expected to carry out their role within a group. The roles are reader, identifier, planner and checker. These roles are not only to help the children work cooperatively in a group, but it allows for them to go through a word problem dissecting it, reading it multiple times, asking themselves what is the problem asking them to do, identifying key words and ideas and then checking their work.

Social Studies-

Children will learn about Christmas around the world this week! If anyone has favorite Christmas books to read to the class, please send them in!

Science-

This week we will begin work on balance and motion. A new experiment is being planned and I will be sharing the details with you shortly!

Sincerely,

Ms. Kender
