1. Please send your child to school on time every single day. School starts at 8:10 a.m. Lateness is a disruption to instruction.
2. Please remember to check your child’s folder daily.
3. Please send your child to school with 5 sharpened #2 pencils daily.
4. All tests must be signed and returned back to school.
5. Please complete all daily homework assignments on the day in which it is assigned so that the students can master the concepts that they have learned at school that day.

7. I will be giving the students an unannounced Reading Comprehension Exam every other week. (Hint, Hint)
8. Please make sure that your child studies their weekly spelling words every night.
9. Reading Response questions will be given four times a week.

11. Please send in $5.00 for your child’s Time for Kids subscription if you have not done so already.

During the month of April, we will continue to read a realistic fiction novel titled, “Flying Solo” by Ralph Fletcher. The text is about a class having a substitute teacher for the day that never shows up which means trouble. When the substitute for Mr. "Fab" Fabiano never shows up and his sixth-grade students are on their own, they set out to prove that they can run the class by themselves. With a little careful planning, it looks like they might just succeed. But when a fight breaks out between Bastian Fauvell and Rachel White over a classmate, Tommy Feathers, who died six months earlier, everything begins to fall apart. Can Rachel deal with the anxieties that plunged her into silence the day Tommy died? Inventive and uniquely constructed, "Flying Solo" follows Mr. Fab’s students hour by hour as they tackle the challenges of an unusual school day. The students will be having numerous discussions about making the right choices and the consequences of making the wrong ones.
During the month of April, the students will continue to work on an important Unit of Study titled “Persuasive Writing.” Persuasive writing is a sophisticated task. During this unit of study, the students will convince their audience to agree on a topic and take action. Effective persuasive writing states a clear opinion that uses reasons and examples to support the argument. Generally, a persuasive essay has the following:
· An introduction that provides an opinion statement and gets the audience
interested in their idea.
· A body that contains reasons and supporting evidence.
· A conclusion that restates the opinion and urges the reader to take action.
During the month of April, the students will be learning about Animal Adaptations. We will learn about how the bodies of various animals help them to meet their needs. We will also learn about how the behaviors of animals help them to meet their needs as well as how living things in the past compare to living things of today.
During the month of April, we are going to work on identifying angles and measuring angles using a protractor.The students will identify and create acute, right, obtuse and straight angles. They will also learn proper use of the protractor to measure angles. Throughout the lessons, students will begin with concrete experiences and move toward authentic application of measurement.
During the month of April, the students will be learning about “The Challenge of Independence.” We will learn about the role of New York in the development of the new nation. In addition, we will also study the Constitution as a framework along with the importance of The Bill of Rights.
