4-213 Newsletter Week of March 7th

1. Please send your child to school on time every single day. School starts at 8:10 a.m. Lateness is a disruption to instruction.

2. Please remember to check your child’s folder daily.

3. Please send your child to school with 5 sharpened #2 pencils daily.

4. All tests must be signed and returned back to school.

5. Please complete all daily homework assignments on the day in which it is assigned so that the students can master the concepts that they have learned at school that day.

6. If you have any questions or comments or concerns, feel free to send a note with your child or email me dfaziola@schools.nyc.gov

7. We will be giving the students an unannounced Reading Comprehension Exam every other week.

8. Please make sure that your child studies their weekly spelling words every night.

9. Our class mommies are Caprice Powe (Makhi’s mom) and Madeline Aliverio (Jaline’s Mom).

10. Just a reminder:

a. Spelling Homework: if you would like your child to just write the spelling words 5x’s each for Tuesday and Thursday instead of completing an activity from the sheet, that assignment will count for their spelling homework.

*** Parent Homework***: We are starting our unit on Persuasive Writing. The class had a quick write today, to persuade me to keep or remove spelling from our homework until after the NY State Tests are over. This activity will be used to help students with their counter arguments in the writing. If you can write a quick opinion on this matter, it would be greatly appreciated. Here is the task I gave to the children:

Since it is close to the NYS ELA/MATH Test, Mrs. Faziola has been thinking about eliminating Spelling for homework.

Units of Study

Reading

We are starting a new book called Flying Solo by Ralph Fletcher. It is a realistic fiction story. Throughout the unit students will keep detailed notes and charts in their notebooks. They will be placed in small groups, to have book discussions. At the end of the book, students will complete a book project (details to follow) and take a test based on the book.

Writing

We are starting our new unit, Persuasive Writing. Students will learn the how to write a persuasive essay using: persuasive text structure, vocabulary, claim, reasons, and counter argument. Students will be writing about a topic that is important to them. They will do research to support their reasons. The final product is a unique persuasive writing

Science

Students learned how living things are classified. There are 5 kingdoms. Students will learn the parts of a plant and human cell. Students will compare and contrast species in different kingdoms.

Math
We will begin our unit on Fractions. This unit will consist of Go Math Chapter 6 and Chapter 7.

Social Studies

In Unit 2 Students will be learning about European influence on New York City. They will learn about the European explorers that went to North American to gain land and resources. They will study the reasons Europeans came to North America. The students will understand the ways in which the landscape and population of the continent changed over time.
