Week of January 25th, 2016


Please remember to check your child’s folder daily and send back all forms that must be completed the next school day.

Homework packets will come home on Monday, and are due back to school on Friday.

Attendance and arriving to school on time is imperative. Attending school regularly is important to ensuring children develop a strong foundation for subsequent learning. Just a reminder that our school day begins at 8:00am, and children are dismissed at 2:10pm.

Please remember we have snack every day in the afternoon. Please provide a healthy snack for your child in a labeled bag.

Food Allergies: If your child has a food allergy, please send in a current picture and write the kind of allergy on the back. For your child’s safety, it is of the utmost importance that this information is kept up-to-date in the cafeteria. Thank you!

The children and I are looking for “Star Readers” and “Arts & Craft” volunteers. A letter from our classroom mommies was placed in your child’s homework folder. If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the bottom portion of the letter, or email our classroom mommies.

January’s book order was placed on Tuesday, January 19th, 2016. If you would like to place your order online, our class code is LQ7KR. Online orders can be placed at any time, but will be submitted by me on the due date. Be on the look-out for February’s order form 🙂

Week of January 25th, 2016

Reading: We will be revisiting the biographies we have read so far (Noah Webster and His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris, I am Abraham Lincoln by Brad Meltzer, I am Rosa Parks by Brad Meltzer) to continue our Biography unit in both reading and writing. The students will learn to make connections between what they learn in books and their own lives. We will use thinking maps to compare and contrast these people and spend time thinking about what we can learn from each individual.

Writing: The students are working on their Buddy Biographies. The students will continue to ask questions and learn more about their buddies by taking notes. This week they will focus on what their buddy wants to be when he/she grows up, adding a dedication page and using their writing tools to make beautiful kindergarten sentences.

Oral Vocabulary Words: teased, unfairly, boycott, brave, equal

Phonics/Phonemic Awareness: Letter/sound: Bb; The Emperor’s Egg by Martin Jenkins. The children will continue to work on Rhyme Recognition & Production, Syllable Segmenting & Counting, and Phoneme Isolation for initial and final sounds.The students are working on blending and segmenting unknown sounds in words they hear in the story.

Math: Big and Small Things: Review size comparison using the words big and small; understand the concept of same-sized objects

Does It Fit? Explore the idea that only a few big objects fit small spaces and many small objects fit into big spaces

Social Studies: Unit 2: Self and Others; Culture and Beliefs. This ties in nicely with our unit on biographies, specifically buddy biographies and learning more about one another.

Science: What Makes Shadows? Describe how shadows change throughout the day
