K103

Week of January 18, 2016

JUST A FEW NOTICES/REMINDERS FOR THIS WEEK…

1. Picture re-take day is tomorrow, January 20th. If you wish for your child to re-take his or her school photo, please send in the completed request form (sent home in student folders on Friday), along with your child’s entire photo packet. The photo packet must be returned to the photography company in order for them to issue replacements with the new photo.

2. I’d like to extend a heartfelt “thank you” to our classroom mommies for putting together an art fund for our classroom and to everyone who contributed to the collection. We will certainly put your generous and thoughtful contributions to good use as we purchase new art materials for our classroom. Thank you!

3. As discussed, we have implemented a new homework schedule, effective as of January 4th. Homework will continue to be distributed on a weekly basis and checked every Friday. A weekly homework sheet will still be given at the start of each week. However, students will now be asked to write individual sentences for their Spelling words on Mondays and Tuesdays to encourage vocabulary growth and attention to context and syntax. On Wednesdays, students will now be given an opportunity to complete a free-write, where they can compose a short story (3-4 sentences) of their choice, using at least 4 of the week’s Spelling words. Students have routinely practiced each of these activities in class, so they should be able to complete their homework with minimal assistance. If you see your child struggling considerably with the homework beyond the first few weeks of this change, please let me know. Students will also receive a new format for completing Reading Responses on Thursday. (See below for details.)

4. Students will receive a newly-formatted Reading Response sheet for homework assignments on Thursdays. Instead of simply circling a happy or sad face, students will now be asked to evaluate their book or chapter by selecting a specific question to answer each week. Each student will receive a Reading Response Topic List sheet with 10 questions. This list should remain in your child’s folder for continued use throughout the duration of the school year. Each week, students may select one question, indicate the question number in the space provided on the RR worksheet, and answer that question using one or more complete sentences. Students may also choose to respond freely to their book for the RR assignments if they prefer to do that instead, though the use of the sheet is highly recommended to help them prepare for first grade reading skills. Students using the topic sheet should aim to select a different question each week.
