Week of January 11th

Curriculum Matters

Reading – This week our class will continue reading Who Was John F. Kennedy? by Yona Zeldis McDonough to kick off our Biography unit. Students will continue to build their deep conversations in their reading groups. We will pay attention to main idea, important details, and context clues.

Writing – Our class will work on our Biography writing unit this month. Please be sure your child has research for this topic. Students can continue to bring in additional research as needed for the next week. Research should be on the child’s appropriate reading level in the form of a book from home or the library as well as printed Internet research. This week we will begin organizing our research. We will work on note taking.

Math – This week students will continue working on chapter 12: Fractions. Students will learn that a fraction represents a part of a whole. We will focus on halves, thirds and fourths. Students will learn to compare different fractions.

Social Studies – We will continue Unit 2: New York City Over Time focusing on lesson two: Dutch and English in New York.

Science – Students will continue Unit 2: Forces and Motion. We will focus on Chapter 3: Motion. Important vocabulary: motion, speed, force, gravity, friction

Habits of Mind – Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations: Use what is learned; Consider prior knowledge and experience; Apply knowledge beyond the situation in which it was learned.
