Week of December 14th

Curriculum Matters

Reading – This week our class will continue reading the non-fiction book Magic Tree House Fact Tracker: Dinosaurs by Mary Pope Osborne. Students are working on improving the quality of their discussion in their small reading groups. They are taking on specific roles and learning how to talk deeply about the text. Students are specifically focusing on building on the ideas of others throughout their conversations as well as using evidence from the text to support their conversations.
*The book projects for Pilgrims are now due Monday (instead of Friday). As always, students must complete one project but can complete both for extra credit.

Writing – This week we will wrap up our non-fiction writing unit: All About Essays. Students will finish publishing their writing. They will meet with one final partner to give final feedback and self reflect on their work throughout the unit.

Math – This week students will finish their work on chapter 7: Metric Length. We will work on measuring using centimeters and meters as well as solving word problems related to measurement.

Social Studies – We will begin Unit 2: New York City Over Time focusing on lesson one: New York City Long Ago.

Science – Students will have a test on the chapter on Earth’s Surface on Monday.

Habits of Mind- Applying Past Knowledge to New Situations: Use what is learned; Consider prior knowledge and experience; Apply knowledge beyond the situation in which it was learned.
